I went back to the Athens Cemetery today in hopes of re-finding the
White-winged Crossbills, but did not see or hear them. I did learn,
however, via the Birding Ohio group on Facebook that someone else was able
to relocate them today, so that's good news. I'll keep checking back there.

Aside from crossbills, my other recent quest has been to keep an eye out on
various lakes and ponds for waterfowl. There's a smallish pond that's maybe
5-7 miles away from the OU airport (in Albany) that I check in on from time
to time, and today I found 14 Lesser Scaup (4 males, 10 female/imm.) and 5
Ring-necked Ducks (1 male, 4 female/imm.) there. The ring-necks were kind
enough to segregate themselves from the scaup so that I was easily able to
count them all. The white margin at the base of the bill on the male, as
well as the white band near the tip of the bill on both sexes, was
unmistakeable on these birds. Also, the white "spur" on the shoulder of the
male stood out like the proverbial sore thumb.

Also present at this pond was a Belted Kingfisher and Great Blue Heron. I
heard a few Killdeer as well, but was not able to locate them by sight.

Good birding,
Heather Aubke
Albany, OH (Athens County)
