Hi all,

Yesterday was the Chandlersville Christmas Bird Count, ably organized and managed by Scott Albaugh. I was there, and helped cover the grounds in and adjacent to the Wilds, which is in Muskingum County (for more on this site go here: http://www.ohiobirds.org/site/library/sites/showsite.php?Site_ID=2)

An adult, or near-adult Golden Eagle, gave us excellent views along International Road a bit to the east of the main parking lot for the Wilds. I even managed some photos, although they will never find their way to the cover of National Geographic. Glen Crippen had seen what was undoubtedly the same bird earlier in the morning, not far from where we saw it. There were a fair number of Rough-legged Hawks about (ca. 12) of both color morphs. About the same number of Northern Harriers were seen. It was great to see more American Kestrels than at any time in recent memory; it appears that the Ohio Ornithological Society’s kestrel box “trail” at the Wilds and vicinity is starting to bear fruit. In spite of being non-nesting season many of these kestrels seem to hang out near favored boxes and hopefully are local birds.

The Short-eared Owls are present in decent numbers. Our team saw eight different birds, and five were in view simultaneously below the overlook platform at Jeffrey Point. Some were close enough that their curious terrier-like barks could be heard. As all of the lakes and ponds are open, good variety and numbers of waterfowl were present, including at least ten species. In all, I believe at least 73 species were tallied, which is very good for this count.

The Ohio Ornithological Society’s 9th annual Wilds Winter Raptor Extravaganza is on January 19th, and there should be plenty of raptors and other birds to be seen. This event is always a well-attended blast, and a great way to delve into the Wilds’ massive Montanaesque landscape with birders who know all the best nooks and crannies. The event is free, but registration is required. Go here: http://www.ohiobirds.org/site/events.php
