Gull numbers off of Edgewater State Park today were pretty staggering, with over 2200 Bonaparte's and over 19,000 Ring-billeds and 5,000+ Herring Gulls, plus four Lesser Black-backs and a growing number of Great Black-backed Gulls. A massive feeding frenzy of 7500+ Red-breasted Mergansers brought 500+ large gulls just offshore. A first year Thayer's/Iceland Gull was very briefly seen and I had extended looks at a SECOND year California Gull - (I first reported as a first year). This individual showed a near classic first year plumage save for a quite complete darker gray mantle - which had me perplexed until reviewing that second year birds often retain majority of their first year plumage until Jan/February. Smaller then HEGU but larger than Ring-billed, this Cali showed dark secondary bar, almost no "window" in the primaries, slender wings, slender bi-colored bill, pale rump, dark tail, and darker gray mantle (in-between Lesser BB and HEGU). Poor record shots attained.
Two RED CROSSBILLS (females) flew over Edgewater SP, as did a handful of Snow Buntings and a single small flock of Lapland Longspurs.
