Fellow birders,

About a year and a half ago, I was fortunate enough to find a pair of
Barn Owls roosting in a very old barn just North of Somerset, Ohio in Perry
County. Shortly after that, construction activity increased around the
barn, and the Owls were soon no longer being seen. Last month, some barn
enthusiasts were investigating another old barn about 1/2 mile from the
first location, and sure enough, a pair of Barn Owls flew out. While not
on a first name basis with this pair, I would bet a meadow vole that it's
the same two.
I visited them Saturday, and considering the amount of pellets and
whitewash, I would guess this pair has been there for quite a while. By
good fortune, I know the owner of this barn, and am considering putting a
nest box or platform in it, and perhaps both of these barns. Neither barn
is used much at all, and if I could increase the likelihood of this pair
actually nesting, I would do it in a heart beat. If anyone has any tips on
how to proceed in the interest of the owls, please let me know. Perhaps
doing nothing is the best way to go. Needless to say, location of barn
cannot be revealed.
