Fellow birders,

My birding companion and friend Vicki Derr and I have completed a
successful year chasing birds in Perry County. We started with a goal of
150 species and ended with A TOTAL OF 181 BETWEEN US, 175 for her and 174
for me. Unless one of the dozen or so other Perry County birders comes
clean with a higher total, we think this could stand as the year list for
the county. (We do know of two other species seen by other birders ,
American Pipit and Sand hill crane, so that would actually bring the total
to 183. This was our first year to try this, and perhaps this next year we
can work with other birders to come up with a more comprehensive list.)
This turned out to be a lot of fun, and we actually saw 71% of the
total species seen, in our own yard. It happens to be a wonderful wooded
60 acres near Clouse Lake and is quite birdy.

If you are interested in more details about our BIG PERRY COUNTY YEAR,
please let me know. I'll be glad to share.

Now on to 2013. At the prompting of Steve Thompson, Coordinator of
the New Lexington Christmas bird count, we did all of our day 1 birding in
the New Lex Circle. We ended the day with 43 species, just 5 shy of our
record for the whole county (which includes Buckeye lake). Here are some of
the highlights;

3 Rough legged hawks, including one on OK Sweeney road and a
beautiful dark morph at Rehoboth (the Perry County Wilds)

3 RUSTY BLACKBIRDS (OK Sweeney Road)

10 White crowned sparrows in one tree on Twp Rd 121

1 FIELD SPARROW ( on Twp rd. 121)

6 Short eared owls (Perry County Wilds, with guest birders Carla
Stimmel and her niece Morgan Stickdorn. Life birds for both)

6 Northern Harriers (5 at the wilds and one on Stage Coach Rd. near
Somerset)

So, fellow birders, it was a great 2012 and a great beginning to 2013.
It's quite clear to me that birding continues to be a great way to make
and keep friends, and find out who your real friends really are.
