About 50,000 gulls at East 72nd Street this afternoon. With the power plant
only on warm standby, there's almost no open water. What there is, and the
nearby ice, are packed with gulls, mostly ring-billed and herring with a good
sprinkling of great black-backed. Jim Heflich, Paula Lozano, Bob Finkelstein,
Laura Keene, and I (mostly the other four) managed to pick out one glaucous, one
Iceland, and one or two lesser black-backed from the crowd
