At about 3:15PM this afternoon, Saturday, we had some good birds in our home neighborhood. There was a Short-eared Owl in the snow covered plowed field along SR534 just south of the Martig Farms complex. To add to the excitement were about 350+ Horned Larks, 25+ Snow Buntings, and 10+ Lapland Longspurs directly across the road in that snow covered plowed field. The Short-eared Owl blended in with the clumps of dirt, but was visibly taller and relatively easy to see (photos can be provided upon request). The location is in southwestern Mahoning County, 0.6 mile north of the intersection of SR534 and Middletown Road. The Short-eared Owl was on the east side of the road and the 3 others were on the west side.
