Hi all,

Along with a number of others, I was at Cleveland's East 72nd Street for a few hours this morning. Lake Erie is iced over there, but the power plant is cranking out warm water, creating a good-sized lead next to shore. Many thousands of gulls were in the general area, but apparently just a fraction of the numbers that were present in days past. Noteworthy was a Glaucous Gull, an Iceland Gull, a first-cycle Thayer's Gull, at least two Lesser Black-backed Gulls, a "tweener" Thayer's/ Iceland that none of us really felt comfortable tagging with certainty, and an interesting dark-mantled apparent hybrid, possibly Herring x Great Black-backed. A Peregrine Falcon kept vigil from the top of one of the power plant's stacks.

Avon Lake's power plant also is creating a good-sized open lead, with a few thousand gulls present, including numerous Great Black-backed Gulls. I could only find one adult Glaucous Gull to represent the more unusual species. A fair number of waterfowl were present, including Common Goldeneye, Buffleheads, lots of Common and Red-breasted Mergansers and two Hooded Mergansers, a smattering of both scaup species, Redhead, Canvasback, and a small flotilla of hardy American Coots. Avon changes characters constantly and bears watching. The best viewing is from the summit of the bluff, and even better the end of the pier. Be forewarned, the end of that pier is a cold and windy place.

I got photos of most of this stuff, and will post some of them on my blog later.

Jim
