The New Year brought good birding to South Bass Island yesterday.
At the Scheeff East Point Nature Preserve, saw 3 long-tailed ducks with about
12 horned grebes, 33 tundra swans, along with the usual bufflehead, ring-
billed and herring gulls. Large rafts of common goldeneyes were seen from the
beach as well a few red-breasted mergansers. Another highlight were two
immature bald eagles at the Preserve. Debbie Woischke and I saw a pair of
adult bald eagles in a tree near the nest they have built at Terwilliger's
Pond, easily visible from the road, the evening before and saw one there New
Year's morning.
Saw 4 hermit thrushes in the woods near my house. Where were they for our
Christmas Count?
Happy New Year!
Lisa Brohl
