I checked several areas along the Scioto River west of Columbus this morning - Watermark Lake, Marble Cliff, Hidden Lakes, Campbell Quarry, and Griggs Dam - looking for waterfowl concentrations as other ponds freeze up. While the river remains open, many of the quarries are nearly frozen. Watermark had only a tiny area that wasn't frozen, and it was crammed with waterfowl. The area below Griggs dam hasn't become the sole open water area yet, so it's accumulated only around 600 waterfowl, mostly geese & mallards. Highlights included:

Black Ducks - 6-8 were along the river below Griggs Dam
Bufflehead - at least 4 were in the waterfowl pack on the tiny open lead of Watermark Lake
Redhead - 4 were at Watermark lake
Ring-necked Duck - around 80 on Watermark Lake
Hooded Mergansers - 8 on Watermark Lake, and another 6 on the Scioto below Griggs dam
Pied-billed grebes - 2 were at Watermark, and another 1 was below Griggs dam
Amer.Coots - 120 were still at Watermark Lake, jostling one another in the tiny space of open water
Gulls- flocks of Ring-bills were on the ice at Watermark Lake, MarbleCliff, and above Griggs dam
Horned Lark - at least 1 flyover at Watermark Lake
Winter Wren - 1 was foraging in the snow in the woods below Griggs dam

Afterwards I went out to Hilliard to check on a series of ponds stretching from Municipal Park down to Spindler Park. This area is often good for goose flocks, but all of the ponds were frozen and no geese were around. The only birds of note out there were small groups of Tree Sparrows at several of the parks along this route, plus a pair of Hairy Woodpeckers in the small woodlot at Hilliard Municipal Park.
