The Gypsum Count was held on Friday January 4.  86 Species and 55715
individuals were observed by 8 groups which is one of our higher
counts.  Highlights for the count were Greater White-fronted Goose,
Ring-necked Pheasant, Great Egret, Black-crowned Night-Heron,
Peregrine Falcon, Killdeer, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Fox Sparrow, and
2 Brewer's Blackbirds.  The Brewer's Blackbirds were observed and
photographed at the Castalia Fish Hatchery.

The Ottawa NWR Christmas Count was held on Saturday January 5.  79
species and 14479 individuals were observed by 10 groups.  Species
count was higher than the 42 year average of 66 species buy
individuals were well below the average of 54350.  Highlights for the
count were Ring-necked Pheasant, Black-crowned Night-Heron,
Red-shouldered Hawk, Sandhill Crane, Long-eared Owl, Short-eared Owl,
Rufous Hummingbird(first for the count), Northern Shrike, Savannah
Sparrow, and Common Redpoll.
