We hope to see you Monday at 7pm for an interesting citizen science program!
All are welcome. - Darlene

DCBC PROGRAMS FOR WINTER

The Delaware County Bird Club meetings and program presentations take
place on the fourth Monday of each month, September through April, except in
November and December when they may be held earlier in the month to
accommodate the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays. Please join us in the
City of Delaware at the Ohio Wesleyan University, Schimmel-Conrades Science
Center, Room 163. Conversation and refreshments begin at 7:00 PM; the
meetings and programs start at 7:30 PM. Parking is available next to the
Selby Stadium on the east side of Henry Street and in the lot south of the
Science Center next to Branch Rickey Arena.

February 25th: NestWatch Project Leader: Monitoring Nesting Birds with the
Power of Citizen Science - Jason Martin, Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology.

NestWatch is a nationwide citizen science program run by the Cornell
Lab of Ornithology designed to track status and trends in the reproductive
biology of birds, including when nesting occurs, number of eggs laid, how
many eggs hatch, and how many hatchlings survive. Every year, thousands of
volunteers monitor nests and report their observations online at
NestWatch.org where they are added to a continually growing database. This
information is then used by researchers to study various aspects of nesting
biology, including how it may be changing over time due to the influence of
climate change. By participating in NestWatch, you can make invaluable
contributions to science while learning firsthand about the often secretive
world of nesting birds. Learn more about the program and how you can become
a NestWatcher.

Jason Martin earned a Ph.D. in Wildlife Ecology & Conservation from the
University of Florida in 2009, studying the impact of agricultural practices
on nesting Barn Owls. Prior to this he contributed to a variety
conservation-based research projects, including efforts that ultimately
afforded protection status to Franklin's Ground Squirrel in Illinois. He has
also worked as a wildlife biologist for the New York State Department of
Environmental Conservation and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission, has been an informal science educator for over 10 years, and
currently is an adjunct professor in the biology department of Tompkins
Cortland Community College (Dryden, NY).

Jason joined the Citizen Science program at the Cornell Lab of
Ornithology in 2011 as the project leader of the NestWatch and BirdCams
programs. Under his guidance both programs have flourished. BirdCams has
gained national recognition and has since split off to be coordinated
full-time by other Lab staff. The growth of NestWatch is centered around
Jason's efforts to partner with local organizations, such as nature centers,
parks, and other nature-minded groups, all across the country. As the
NestWatch project leader, Jason also coordinates the distribution of
NestWatch data to researchers and serves on the research development
committee of The Peregrine Fund's American Kestrel Partnership (Boise, ID)
and is a research advisor for the Tracy Aviary (Salt Lake City, UT).
