The Purple Sandpiper continues at the warm water outflow at East 72nd street. Observers must carefully walk down to waters edge on the break wall and patiently scan the close break wall immediately offshore, the ice floe edge, plus the rocks and shoreline immediately below one's feet for this bird. It will disappear for many minutes at a time as it forages behind and within large gaps in rocks. It seems to be faring quite well feeding on fish scraps, detritus, vegetation matter, and perhaps even gull droppings. It was observed point-blank by 5 birders this evening (Wed the 6th) as the sun set. Two first-cycle Glaucous Gulls and a 2nd-cycle Thayer's Gull plus three Lesser Black-backs and Canvasback, Redhead, Ruddy Duck, American Black Duck, Lesser Scaup were present.
