Greetings-
East 72nd was largely void (as in almost completely) of gulls today, which is completely bizarre considering it has been packed to the brim with 30 to 80,000 gulls the past several weeks. The sheer number of gizzard shad in the open water section is astounding. We had one flyover first year Glaucous Gull. No Purple Sandpiper - hasn't been seen for several days now. A pair of Peregrine Falcons was really kicking birds up today and largely was the cause of a lack of gulls. Tim Colborn and Nancy Anderson watched a Peregrine take a female Lesser Scaup that was miraculously able to literally squirm away from under the falcons grasp and make a mad dash to the water.

Eastlake was fantastic, with brilliant looks at two first year Icelands, first year and second year Glaucous Gulls and a first year Thayer's Gull - all offering nearly two solid hours of study amidst a group of gulls foraging on the ice pack. At least 3 Lesser Black-backs present. Many Great Black-backs. Both Surf (2) and Black (1) Scoters were present with Gadwall, Mallard, American Black Duck, Ruddy Duck, American Wigeon, Hooded and Red-breasted Mergansers, Common Goldeneye, Bufflehead, great numbers of Redhead, good numbers of Canvasback, and Lesser and Greater Scaup. Pied-billed Grebes and Great Blue Herons present.
