We finished up our (impossible) task of attempting a "Summit County Century" yesterday by getting a Northern Shrike in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park at the southeast corner of Quick Rd. and Akron-Peninsula Rd. The bird was perched right along A.P. Rd. in a small tree where the Valley Bridle Trail crosses the road. It then moved to the top of a small oak that was still holding leaves, before heading farther back into the field not visible from the road, though walking the Valley Bridle Trail out into the field may yield the bird again.
The shrike was our 80th. bird for Summit County in January. Well short of our intended target of 100, but ten species higher than our predicted 70. We had a list of 55 species in our "Should Get" category and we managed to get 53 out of the 55, missing out on only Winter Wren (really!) and Purple Finch.
