I was able to relocate the Red-necked Grebe at Hoover Reservoir (Franklin
County) reported yesterday by Dan Sanders and Doreene Linzell. I first
found the bird from the Bel Lago restaurant parking lot, and then moved to
the boat launch just south of the restaurant, where the lighting was better.
This bird appears to be in a transitional plumage between winter and
breeding. The neck is mostly reddish, and the bill is almost entirely
yellow. The cheeks are still a dull white, rather than the brighter white
that breeding birds exhibit, but they still contrast nicely with the dark
crown.

I was not able to re-locate the previously reported Long-tailed Duck.
Overall, the south end of Hoover was more sparse than it was a few days ago.
The other highlights included a Horned Grebe, and small flocks of Lesser
Scaup, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Hooded Mergansers, and Ruddy Ducks.

Good Birding,
Alex Champagne
