Northeast Shore, Hoover Reservoir, Delaware Cty

of Biological Diversity holds an Open House every year about this time,
in this case tomorrow, from 10-4, to which the public is invited.
At this time, many Museum collections invite folks to come in, view
displays, and ask questions of curators and graduate students. Usually
over a thousand visitors--kids are welcome--come by. All the
University's biological collections, except for fossils, are housed in
the Museum, including fishes, plants, insects, molluscs, spiders, birds,
etc. The Open Houses are always lively and intriguing.

This mourning Linda and I checked a few of my favoriteareas to find waterfowl on Hoover Reservoir during the winter. The warmertemperatures have opened the water at most locations and the gusty winds drovethe waterfowl to locations that were leeward from the weather. We had a bonanzaof waterfowl off Old Sunbury Road along the eastern shore. The flocks of ducksstretched for over a mile. Adding to our pleasure were the birds observed alongthe old roadbed as we walked from the car north and back. The Bald Eagles puton a dazzling show for us including an adult that hung in place facing the windwhile right over our heads. Red-breasted Nuthatches, a Savannah Sparrow andEastern Bluebirds blazing neon blue in the sunlight didn’t hurt a bit either.
