The White-winged Scoter previously reported from Hoover was still there as
of 4:05 pm. The bad news is that it wandered over to the far (east) side of
the reservoir, so a scope was essential. The good news is that it is in
lovely plumage, with the white mark below the eye easily visible; the white
wing patch on display, at least as we were watching; and even the
scoterbill more or less of discernible from all the way across the
water.

A very brief scan turned up several Horned Grebes, a couple of Pied-billed
Grebes (a little way offshore just north of the parking lot), a Coot, a few
Hooded Mergansers (on the east side nor far from the scoter), and small
numbers of very hardy Tree Swallows.

If you go to look for this bird, dress warmly: the wind was biting.
