Hi all,

A Louisiana Waterthrush, newly arrived, was singing away along a small stream in Adams County yesterday. It represents the vanguard of many more waterthrushes to come. Over the next week or two, most of our waterthrushes should be back and on territory along wooded creeks. Louisiana Waterthrush, which winters primarily in Central America and the Caribbean, is among the first of the Neotropical songbirds to arrive. The first Yellow-throated Warblers will appear in southern Ohio any day now, too. Pine Warblers were singing from nearly every suitable stand of pine, but they don’t have nearly the journey as does the waterthrush or Yellow-throated Warbler – nearly all Pines winter in the southern United States, with small numbers sticking it out as far north as southern Ohio or even further north.

Small numbers of Blue-headed Vireos, Blue-gray Gnatcatchers, Northern Parula, and Black-throated Green Warbler should be back in southern Ohio by next weekend, and the massive Shawnee State Forest in Scioto County would be a great place to go look for them. Info about Shawnee is on the Ohio Ornithological Society’s website: http://www.ohiobirds.org/site/library/sites/showsite.php?Site_ID=16
