Thought that title might have caught your attention. First of all, I
apologize for having sent a personal message about Smith's longspurs
intended for Paul Hurtado to the entire list instead. Second, I thought
readers might be interested in a tale of derring-do by a North American
ornithologist from the old days, when identification was an issue where
nothing but a specimen would do. His name is recalled by anyone who's
seen or sought a Bendire's thrasher.  See
