Those interested only in bird reports can skip this. Two worthwhile
threads on other topics may be found on the Siler (ABA) pages for other
birding lists, involving eBird, and also "Canada" geese, and I recommend
them to others.
On the Texas list is an interesting discussion about eBird, beginning
with a post from Heindel on 29 March, with many replies following: see
http://birding.aba.org/maillist/TX .
Second, I've read--even own--Hanson's first book on geese, and found it
entertaining but very strange. Now the AOU seems to be considering some
taxonomic changes based on its more ambitious successor, which I can
neither afford nor look forward to; thankfully, most experts are panning
it, as it has apparently grown even stranger.
It makes the conceptual back-flips of the Trumpeter Swan Society look
reasonable. It continues to claim that huge numbers of species may be
involved among the white-cheeked geese. Check out the thread beginning
with Wilson's 28 March comment at http://birding.aba.org/maillist/TX
on the IDFrontiers site and see what you think. Also see the AOU
proposal to reject at least one of Hanson's flights of fancy, last in
the list at http://www.aou.org/committees/nacc/proposals/2013-A.pdf .
