Got to Berlin at 5:00. One of the first birds was barred owl, from the northwest.

Even though only a fraction of the ducks Mr Lane reported remain, it took about an hour to scan my way to the bridge. Just as I was getting discouraged I heard an unfamiliar honk. I thought swans, looked up, and eight greater white-fronted geese were flying over, heading into the sunset.

On the way back, a screech-owl was calling from the east side of the trail, not far from the bridge. There is a bench on that side around the mile marker.

Not long after, three SHORT-EARED OWLS flushed from below the trail, on the same side. I recognized their distinctive flight, and a light patch on the wings. One landed in a tree and I was able to scope the face. Approaching the parking lot at US 224, a woodcock was twittering overhead.

Peace,
Gregory Bennett
