Today's Tuesday visitors to the Berlin Lake Trail and nearby 224 Causeway, were rewarded with the excellent opportunity to see at least 17 species of waterfowl. Some of the species numbered in the hundreds. The lake was mostly frozen, with very few open water areas, but where these spots were, there was a wonderful variety. For anyone wanting to enhance their 2013 list, presently this is the place. The following is a list of the waterfowl seen, plus other sightings of interest: Canada Goose, Wood Duck, Gadwall, American Wigeon, American Black Duck, Mallard, Northern Pintail, Green-winged Teal, Canvasback, Redhead, Ring-necked Duck, Lesser Scaup, Bufflehead, Common Goldeneye, Hooded Merganser, Common Merganser, and Red-breasted Merganser. Apparently the eight Greater White-fronted Geese seen on Sunday and Monday were not relocated today. Some of the other birds of interest were Horned Grebe, Bald Eagle, and two Barred Owls a short distance down the trail from the parking lot, just past the gated drive to the left, calling "who-cooks-for-you". The location is in southeastern Portage County; to reach the trailhead parking lot, go 1.5 miles east of the town of Deerfield on US224. For viewing from the trail, it requires a 2.5 mile round trip walk. A scope is definitely recommended!
