Good hawk-watching in Geauga County lately. Bass Lake Rd is a good hawk route: runs west of and parallel to Rt. 44. Red-tails often between US 322 and Butternut Road [Munson Twp] along Bass Lake Road - 2 of them today; Red-shouldered hawks often seen between Butternut and Pekin [Newbury Twp].

Throughout the winter there has been a pair of kestrel on the wires between Butternut and Pekin, often see a single bird, sometimes a pair; saw the pair today. 5 times in the last two weeks have seen one or the other feeding on a meadow vole. There was also another kestrel today on the wires along Rt. 87 in Newbury just west of Elm St. (Rt. 87 between Auburn Rd. and Punderson State Park). Good prospects for seeing a red-shouldered hawk along there too.

Also, for the second time in the last couple weeks, there was a Northern shrike in the hedge running down the middle of the hayfield on the SE corner of Butternut and Bass Lake Road.

Still good for rough-legged hawks on Hayes Rd. in Middlefield Twp. Best stretch continues to be between Nauvoo and Peters Rd. Sunday 3/3, had an adult female light phase hovering in the sunlight for a fantastic viewing; an adult male light phase and, at a distance, a dark morph on a fence post. Two killdeers and a red-tail along Peters Rd. too.
