A stellar day at the Edgewater-Battery Park hawk watch at Edgewater State Park was light on raptors but complete overload on passerines, with over 20,000 Red-winged Blackbirds, thousands of Common Grackles, plus cowbirds, a few Rusty Blackbirds, tons of Killdeer, over 300 Horned Larks, over 100 Lapland Longspurs, plus 5 Killdeer, 1 Wilson's Snipe, 1 American Woodcock, and 1,000+ American Robins pushing east over the park. At least 5 Eastern Meadowlarks entertained us at close range feeding in the grass lots in the parking lot. Canada Geese flocks were heading due north and we had two flocks of Northern Pintail (one with 2 Northern Shovelers) plus Wood Ducks on the move. American Crows put in another huge movement. The sky was simply packed with birds all day long.
Turkey Vulture - 55, Red-tailed Hawk - 13, Cooper's Hawk - 7, Sharp-shinned Hawk - 2, Red-shouldered Hawk - 4, Merlin - 1, was the official raptor count for the day, which was much less then expected but still very welcomed as a harbinger to spring.
Huge props to Gabe for his adult Golden that passed the Conneaut watch. Fingers crossed for Golden and/or goshawk at Edgewater this year. In 2011 we had an immature goshawk pass 20 feet overhead at Edgewater (point-blank photos by Dane Adams).
Let the games begin.
