Just returned from birding four days with Larry Richardson (4/27-30/13) at the southern end of Ohio (plus a quick jaunt to Kentucky). The highlight of the trip was a Chuck-will’s-widow seen in flight then heard near Nature Conservancy’s Eulett Center in the Edge of Appalachia region on 4/29/13. Other birds of interest seen on the trip:

Willet (4/27/13) – seen just west of Portsmouth in a floodplain pond
Summer Tanager (4/29/13) – on Waggoner-Riffle Road in the Edge of Appalachia area
Whip-poor-will (4/29/13) – heard on Pond Lick Road
Pileated Woodpecker – about ten seen over the four days
Vireos: White-eyed (many), Yellow-throated (many), Blue-headed, and Red-eyed seen and heard throughout the trip (no Warbling Vireo seen or heard)
Many expected warblers seen often and well including: Kentucky, Worm-eating, Yellow-throated, Cerulean, Hooded, Pine, Prairie, Blue-winged, Northern Parula, Louisiana Waterthrush, Yellow-breasted Chat (still a warbler?)

Extralimitally, we had Swainson’s Warbler in Daniel Boone National Forest, Blue Grosbeak off Old Route 801 (just north of the NF), and Purple Finch at Carter Caves.

Good birding,

Tim Colborn
