On the recommendation of Craig Holt we visited the Bandy Road site this morning, Saturday, from about 9AM to 10AM. It did not disappoint. We saw everything Craig mentioned plus more. Bonaparte's Gulls were the most numerous species, with an amazing 130+ in all stages of plumage, being present. 80+ Pectoral Sandpipers were mixed in and throughout the resting Bonaparte's Gulls. The interesting vocalizations of the gulls could constantly be heard. Numerous Greater and Lesser Yellowegs were scattered in the field. The single Least Sandpiper that Craig had mentioned, was hanging out with about 20 American Pipits. A flock of Wild Turkeys were foraging on the back left edge of the field, visible above them is a Great Blue Heron nesting colony located on the headwaters of the Mahoning River. Upclose waterfowl were Northern Shoveler, Green-winged Teal, Blue-winged Teal, Lesser Scaup, and Hooded Mergansers. Across the road on the west side, easily seen birds of interest were: Swamp Sparrow, Red-headed Woodpecker, and Eastern Phoebe. In the past, this flooded field area has hosted goodies such as Willet and Lesser Black-backed Gull. The Bandy Road site is located 2.0 miles east on US62 from the county line intersection of Stark, Mahoning, and Columbiana counties on the east edge of the city of Alliance. At Bandy Road go south 0.5 mile. The flooded field should be productive for several days. Bob and Denise Lane / Mahoning County
