This weekend I drove down to the Shiloh Battlefield to walk the first
"great" battle of U.S. history. (More casualties in one day than in all
the U.S. wars before) While there I happened on a group of birders who
were watching a Bald Eagle on its nest with 3 chicks. The chicks would
stand, in turn, and stretch their wings, like they were practicing
their first flight. Later I watched the Eagle fishing from the Tennessee
River.

In addition, I saw a small flock of Indigo Buntings, a Yellow Rumped
Warbler and, finally, a fire red Summer Tanager. I realize that all of
these birds can be seen from Ohio but I thought it particulary apt that I
saw Red, White and Blue birds.

The day before I saw between 18 and 2 dozen Wild Turkeys along the Nachez
Parkway. It was such a great birding trip.
