I sat at LaDue Reservoir this evening, with several other people, trying
to figure out what kind of loon we were watching.

Small, next to the abundant common loons, the first thought was red throated
loon. Elusive, under the water more often than on the surface it was hard to
get a good look. But late in the evening, when it started preening and we
were getting more opportunity to study it, other options came to mind.

Pacific loon? The border on the side of the neck looked straight, and there
didn't seem to be any white around the eye. The back seemed uniformly dark,
without speckling and we couldn't see any white on the flanks. So, if
you have an opportunity to go and look, and have experience with these
loons, help us decide.
