First, some low-quality video from this morning:
https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10200912022941390

The red phalarope is currently being seen in a newly restored wetlands area
at the Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park. The wetlands go south from Kuhlwein
Road to the north end of the Wet Prairie area (formerly the "grain elevator
wetlands").

This area has many small ponds and small hills which makes it difficult to
see birds. Walking out in between these ponds is guaranteed way to flush
them -- I recommend walking AROUND this wetland complex, not through it,
and resisting the urge to get close to the phalaropes (Wilson's is also
present) to try and get photos.

Option #1: Steve provided great directions. Walk the trail south from the
parking lot at Kuhlwein Rd. until you reach a white house (listen for
warblers in the trees -- I had Tennessee here this morning). From here, if
no birders are close by, I would skirt around the small ponds to your left,
and walk the south boundary of these new wetlands. The best shorebird
habitat is along the southeast edge of the new wetlands complex.

Option #2: It is a slightly longer walk but you can also park at the Wet
Prairie trails parking lot (farther south along Darby Creek Rd, on the left
just past the entrance to the new nature center, which is worth a visit!) &
walk the Teal Trail loop north to this same area. Walking back to my car
last night after sundown, along the west side of the loop, I had Henslow's
& Grasshopper Sparrows, Sedge Wrens, American Bittern, Sora, etc.

Also, there is a small pullout off Kuhlwein Rd near a stand of tall
cottonwoods. One pond is easily scoped from here, or the road, and is worth
checking if you are in the area. I had a flock of 8 Dunlin here this
morning.

Good birding,
Paul Hurtado
