Thismorning I was joined by 8 hardly individuals for an Audubon Society bird walkat the Hoover Nature Preserve. We met at Hoover Meadows at 8:00 AM and beganthe morning walking the paths in the meadows. Under a slight drizzle we weregreeted by a Common Yellowthroat that teased us but would not come out. I hopedthis wasn’t a sign of the day to come. Fortunately the weather held and thebirds clocked in. Two immature Bald Eagles did a fly over, one chased by aRed-winged Blackbird. Multiple Green Herons were moving above the wetlands. Weobserved numerous Orchard and Baltimore Orioles. Warblers were represented by Blue-winged,Black & White, Blackburnian, Yellow, Yellow-rumped, Magnolia, AmericanRedstart and Common Yellowthroat. Flycatchers included Great Crested, Willow,Acadian, Phoebe, Peewee and Eastern Kingbird. Lots of Gray Catbirds, BrownThrasher and Rose-breasted Grosbeak.

We nextmoved across the street and walked Old Sunbury Road. My highlight was the ProthonotaryWarblers. I counted 15 males and 6 females. Several of the males put on a showfor my guests, perching on nest boxes and singing their hearts out for them. Ibrought the group to a good vista to view the Bald Eagle nest. The eaglets aregetting BIG, practically overwhelming the nest. They are very close to fledgingthe nest. Other species observed include Red-headed Woodpecker, Double CrestedCormorant, Osprey, Great Crested Flycatcher, Baltimore and Orchard Orioles.
Thedownside, ticks. They are out in numbers so DEET season is open. Tow guests hadone each, one had enough that we lost count, everyone else had none (bestchoice).

Adecent day of birding considering the weather. A nice group of people to enjoya morning birding with.
