I took advantage of the great weather this morning tomonitor a portion of my nest box trail along the northeast shore of HooverReservoir in Delaware County. From the moment I began I almost constantly heardthe “Sweet, Sweet, Sweet, Sweet” of male Prothonotary Warblers. In the sunlightthey were a rich golden-yellow as they sang from branches, the top of nestboxes and any other advantageous perch. I counted 29 sing males and I was ableto locate 19 nest locations, made easier by the 10 using my nest boxes. Withthe additional territories previously identified at Oxbow Road, Wiese Road,Areas L, M and N I have verified 79 to date. Sunday we plan to launch the S.S.Hoover and begin our monitoring of the islands and areas accessible only byboat. If the current pace keeps up it should be a very good year for theProthonotary Warblers at Hoover Reservoir.

Otherthan the Prothonotaries, warblers were mostly absent with only Blue-winged Warbler (1), Tennessee Warbler (1), NorthernParula (1), Yellow Warbler (5), Yellow-throated Warbler (2), LouisianaWaterthrush (1) and Common Yellowthroats (3).

At the Bald Eagle nest things were active;one adult was at the nest with the ever growing eaglets. The second adult wasperched nearby. Fledging time is almost here for the triplets.

Great Crested Flycatchers andBaltimore Orioles seemed to be everyplace along the trail. A complete list ofthe morning’s observations follows.
