Fellow bird looker atters,

This morning, my birding friend Vicki Derr located what she first
thought was an American Bittern along the edge of Clouse Lake in Perry
County. I quickly showed up with a scope and soon relocated the bird (or a
different bird??!!). Thanks to a recent quick lesson from The Bird Chick
at Magee Marsh, I got a fairly decent digiscope photo. Looks like it is a
Juvenile Black-crowned Night Heron. I've been corrected/educated several
times on this listserve, so I would gladly send photos to anyone
interested enough to confirm this ID.
We are a bit troubled by the early date. We did not expect to find a
juvenile night heron out and about in May, and hence the inclination to
call this a Bittern (plus the fact that it would be a Perry County Lifer).
Review of the literature does suggest that they, the Night Herons, might
be out and about, but apparently most of the knowledge is based on Lake
erie data. As always, any help would be greatly appreciated.
