This morning I surveyed several areas of theHoover Nature Preserve in and around Galena, Delaware County for ProthonotaryWarbler Activity. The female Prothonotary Warblers are back at the preserve andthe males are becoming very territorial. The males have become extremely aggressivein defending their turf from intruders and the chases are like watching a movieof the RAF defense of England during WWII. The females are checking out thenest boxes and things are looking good for another productive season. Today Iconfirmed the presence of Prothonotary Warblers at Oxbow Road, Wiese Road, AreaM including along the boardwalk, Area N and Dustin Road. Earlier I hadconfirmed activity at Old Sunbury Road, the Eastshore Yacht Club, Twin Bridges,Yankee Street and Area Q.

Activity other than the PROWs was also goodthis morning. There were 6 Osprey in the area including those on the twoplatforms and others in flight overhead. The Bald Eagles are doing well ontheir nest along the east shore. There were many Yellow Warblers around and wecounted 22 at Wiese Road alone. At Wiese Road there were also Black-throatedBlue and Yellow-rumped Warblers, Red-eyed, Warbling and White-eyed Vireos,Baltimore and Orchard Orioles, Eastern Towhees and many Gray Catbirds.

The boardwalk at Area M, in addition to PROWshad a Red-headed Woodpecker, Double Crested Cormorants, Cliff Swallows andPhoebe.

Area N added Red-headed Woodpecker, PileatedWoodpecker, Northern Parula, Yellow-throated Warbler, Yellow-rumped Warbler, aWinter Wren and a Green Heron.
