Subject: Berliner-Greenlawn,6-04
Checked these 2 areas near downtown Columbus yesterday morning, and found lots of active residents but no obvious migrants. Berliner had lots of diversity, while the cemetery was a bit slow. I also stopped at the Hart Rd Quarry, but it held little. Notables in 2 hours included:
Acadian Flycatchers - 3-4 at Berliner, calling in the lush riparian forest where they often breed.
Willow Flycatcher - 1 at Hart Rd, 1 at Greenlawn
E.Phoebe - at their usual spots around the Pit and the Ravine bridge in Greenlawn Cemetery
Gr.Crested Flycatchers - 4 at Berliner, 2 at Greenlawn; high #s for both spots.
Rough-winged Swallows - 10+ at Berliner, preying on a large midge hatch over the river.
BANK SWALLOW - 10+ at Berliner, 2 at Hart Rd. They must be nesting in one of the quarries near downtown.
White-eyed Vireo - 1 calling along the bikepath at Berliner
Warbling Vireos - 4 at Berliner, 1 at Hart Rd
Blue Jay - lots snaking around looking for nests, but a pair were feeding a juvenile at the ravine in the Cemetery
Wood Thrush - 3 singing along the bikepath at Berliner
Gray Catbird - one of the most common birds, with 15+ at Berliner, another 5 at Hart Rd, and 4 at Greenlawn
Cedar Waxwings - pairs in many locations. The mulberry crop this year seems very strong here.
Yellow Warblers - 2 singing at both Berliner and Hart Rd
Prothonotary Warblers - 2 singing along the bikepath riparian woods at Berliner
Yellow-thr.Warbler - 2 singing along the Berliner bikepath, an unusual location for them
Scarlet Tanager - 1 singing in the riparian forest along the Bleriner bikepath, an unusual location for them
Baltimore Oriole - 4 along the Berliner bikepath; another at the Cemetery
Orchard Oriole - 1 along the Berliner bikepath at the south end where it borders the huge field

Subject: Lake Hope-21 Warblers
Lake Hope State Park & Zaleski State Forest are located 14 miles west of
Nelsonville(Rte 33) off of Rte 278. I spent 2 days in the area. It was nice
& cool,so I birded all day long!! Below is a list of some of the birds
found. I had the 20 breeding Warblers & a late migrant-Canada Warbler.
.Akeena(my dog) & I were walking Hebron Hollow Trail. She was ahead of me
in the creek. I stopped for a moment on the trail. I saw movement on the
forest floor. It was an Ovenbird, which was watching Akeena. As Akeena
walked farther from the Ovenbird, she turned toward me & slowly opened her
Brood Patch & sat down on her nest. As Akeena approached me on the trail,
she then saw me. She got up & disappeared. In about 30 seconds, I see this
little head surface above a leaf. She saw me & lowered her head &
disappeared again.
