This morning, Friday, from 6:30AM to 10:30AM, we visited "The Conneaut Sandspit" and "Conneaut Harbor Area" in Ashtabula County. It was overcast; the temperature was a cool, pleasant, average sixty-four degrees. No remarkable finds, but still a good Conneaut day. The first birds we saw as we entered the bay were 6 adult Mute Swans, a new species for our Conneaut list, on a sandbar with Great Blue Herons. These are the only Mute Swans we have ever had at Conneaut. After finding a convenient viewing spot, we did a Bald eagle count. Today's total was 36 (3 adults & 33 juveniles), once again an impressive number. By 8AM, all but 3 had dispersed to out of sight locations. At one time 82+ Turkey Vultures blackened the sky overhead, soaring above the sandspit in a tight circle. Today we counted the number of Bank Swallow nesting burrows, which came up to 130+. At least two burrows were occupied by Belted Kingfishers. An interesting, but shocking event, was watching an adult Ring-billed Gull snatch a young Barn Swallow, and amazingly swallow it. Some of the other special birds seen today were 4 Least Sandpipers, an Osprey, 2 Forster's Terns, and 3 Caspian Terns. All in all we recorded 48 species of birds during our four hour beach adventure.
