Upon our arrival to "The Sandspit" at 7:15AM, we were greeted by Bob Krajeski, who was already enjoying the beautiful sixty-two degree temperature. Six American Avocets, 1 at the public beach, and five at "The Sandspit", were a great way to start the day. Amazingly, at the public beach, beach walkers were passing within ten feet of the the avocet, oblivious, and not even taking a glance, at the rarity nearby. Bald Eagle count at 8AM was 31, 2 adults and 29 juveniles. Mom Common Merganser and here four, almost adult size kids, were on the breakwall by the opening toward the public beach. Shorebirds present are 6 Semipalmated PLovers, 3 Short-billed Dowitchers, 4 Sanderlings, 5 Semipalmated Sandpipers, 1 Least Sandpiper, 2 Spotted Sandpipers, and 4 Killdeer. Other birds of interest were a single Bonaparte's Gull, 3 Caspian Terns, 1 Marsh Wren, 1 Osprey, and 1 Least Bittern. It is presently 10:20AM Friday morning, we have recorded 42 species during our visit.

Bob and Denise Lane / Mahoning County
