Today at Dorset State Wildlife Area's (Ashtabula Cty.) main impoundment saw
1 Least Bittern and 2 American Bitterns. The Least Bittern "flew" briefly
- up from the cattails - over a bit - and back down. The 2 American
Bitterns got up higher and flew about 100 yards to a different part of the
marsh.

The main impoundment is on Tower Rd. (north side) approx. 2 miles east of
Rt. 193.
The State has mowed the path from the gravel parking lot to the west side
dike - and mowed the dike back all the way to the north woods - so walking
is much easier there than usual for mid-summer.

Other notable birds seen there today included Common Gallinules (family
groups),
Pied-billed Grebe, Great Egrets, Cliff Swallows, Green Herons, and a
Virginia Rail (heard only). A nice assortment of other passerine species
associated with wetlands too.
