Greetings - Led a CLE Metroparks shorebird workshop today, starting at Lorain impoundment (storm deluge pushed us west immediately), Crane Creek Estuary (from Estuary trail), and Middle Harbor, East Harbor State Park. We ended the day with 76 species and 19 species of shorebirds. Ben Morrison had Western Sandpiper and White-rumped at Middle Harbor, which we missed, for a total of 21 species reported in the immediate region today.
Ottawa NWR entrance pool: adult and immature CATTLE EGRETS present at entrance.
Crane Creek Estuary highlights: MARBLED GODWITS (2 continuing), 6 Long-billed Dowitchers, many Short-billed Dowitchers, both yellowlegs in good numbers, many Least and Semipalmated Sandpipers, Solitary and Spotted, Wilson's Snipe, many Semipalmated Plovers, Killdeer, one Stilt Sandpiper. Tons of Common, Caspian and Forster's Terns, Bonaparte's Gulls, flyby LEAST BITTERN.
Middle Harbor highlights from the Buck Road trail spot: a juvenile LAUGHING GULL dropped in for a short time and sat on the mudflats (distant photos) before pushing east. POINT-BLANK looks at shorebirds here, including a RED KNOT, 3 WILSON'S PHALAROPES, 1 RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, 42 STILT SANDPIPERS, 6 BAIRD'S SANDPIPERS, tons of Least and Semipalmated and Pectoral Sandpipers, many Short-billed Dowitchers, over 100 Semipalmated Plovers, many Lesser and Greater Yellowlegs.
