The birds of Ohio suffered a great loss with the death of Dr. Bill Richter in Canfield on Aug. 7. Bill was without question one of the most knowledgeable and active students of the raptors of the world. His humble and private -- but warm -- persona made his important contributions to the conservation of eagles and hawks known only to those he thought had a "need to know." This reticence was due also to his sad experiences after he revealed to birders the location of nesting sites he had discovered on his constant treks, such as the nesting areas of northern goshawks in Western PA. His lifelong dedication to the welfare of raptors however did not inhibit his accumulation of prodigious knowledge of all avian species throughout the eastern United States. Those who knew him did not hesitate to call on his formidable mental data base of virtually any avian species.

He will be sadly missed.

Bill Jones
Canfield (Youngstown)
