I too lament Bill Richter's passing, and I trust the Grant Cook Bird
Club or some other organization will preserve his papers. I had only a
single lengthy and enlightening phone conversation with him, about
nesting long-eared owls in Ohio, which eventually involved the story of
his discovery of the nest of a black rail in the state--the first
documented record I know of--which I later wrote up for the Ohio
Cardinal. He was very knowledgeable, friendly, and willing to share his
considerable experience, only a tiny sliver of which was he able to
share on this occasion. I'm hoping others will be able to pass along
more of what he learned in his decades of bird study in the field.
