Ohio Wetlands Association
Special Field EventLast call for registration to the Shorebirds in Western Lake Erie Wetlands Shorebird StudyMarking these shorebirds helps to identify those individuals that stick around after being banded. The paint is harmless and soon wears off.

As of this posting, just two openings are left.
Register now by email [log in to unmask] your name and contact information including phone. This event was cancelled in the spring due to weather. I hope we will have suitable conditions for field work on the date we have chosen. More information will be provided closer to the event date to those who register.

The mudflats and coastal wetlands of the western basin of Lake Erie are critical habitats for migrating shorebirds. Southward migration has begun. This will be a great opportunity to observe a class of birds that normally is well observed only by use of a spotting scope.Keith Norris is conducting research on shorebirds as a graduate student at Ohio State University in the School of Environment and Natural Resources Terrestrial Wildlife Ecology Laboratory. He catches birds, measures and bands them before releasing them unharmed. He takes advantage of the wetland stopover sites along their migratory pathway in the coastal marshes of Northwestern Ohio. See more about what he does at http://twel.osu.edu/projects/Norris.html.
OWA has been invited to participate in his research and observe these delicate and long-legged birds in hand. A limited number of participants can join the experience on Saturday August 17th. We will meet and be ready to depart at 6:30am in Port Clinton, Ohio conveniently at the Burger King where you can get a coffee before going to the site. Locations are determined by current weather conditions and migration patterns. We will not know in advance where our ultimate destination will be.Please join or renew your membership in Ohio Wetlands Association, today.
