Hello all,

Mixed in with over 550 shorebirds in the skyponds W of Riddle Rd. at the
railroad crossing (specifically NW pond) near Bellevue was a single
juvenile Wilson's and 2 juvenile Red-necked Phalaropes. I also noted one
juvenile Stilt Sandpiper here among the numerous Lesser Yellowlegs, Least
and Semipalmated Sandpipers.

Also of interest was one (possibly 2) red color-marked Least Sandpiper(s)
from our current banding operation in Carroll Twp., Ottawa Co., part of a
long-term shorebird migration ecology study in the Lake Erie Marsh Region.
So, if you see a plover or peep with red (pink when faded) color on the
breast, it's almost certainly not blood but rather feathers colored with a
non-toxic red marker. Keith Norris ([log in to unmask]) and I would
appreciate any and all reports of color-marked birds. It would be great if
someone could confirm more than one colored peep in the Bellevue area this
week.
