This morning, Saturday, from 9:15PM to 10:15PM, we observed the probable same Buff-breasted Sandpiper found, and reported, by Ben Morrison yesterday. It was at the exact location he described to us by him; looking from his arrow in the sand. A nice variety of shorebirds in good numbers were seen, with numerous American Golden-Plovers present. The location is at The Berlin Lake State Wildlife Area, in extreme northeast Stark County. From SR225, about two miles north of the town of Alliance, turn west on Price Street across from The Barber Airfield, cross the bridge, and park at the lot immediately on the right. Walk back to the bridge and go down the slope to the right, follow the west shoreline for about a half mile south until you reach the corner at a little willow snag blocking the beach. Start scanning across the water to the sandbars. A scope is necessary. This is a scenic, pleasant walk, requiring only tennis shoes. If you continue around the corner to the right, you will see The Deer Creek Dam and bicycle trail bridge crossing it. The confluence of the two streams at the Buff-breasted site are The Mahoning River on your left, and Deer Creek going off to the right. This area, from the described location, to the east side of the of the SR225 Bridge, a short distance to the northeast, has annually been productive for Buff-breasted Sandpipers the second and third weeks of September. Remember, the Buffy's are hard to see, blending in with the surroundings.

Bob and Denise Lane / Mahoning County
