The last 3 days have seen the arrival and increase of many temperate migrants around Columbus. These are birds that are headed for the southern U.S., rather than the tropics; many of them are morning, rather than nocturnal, migrants. On Monday, I stopped at Academy & Woodside Green park in Gahanna, yesterday at Jeffrey Park in Bexley, and today along Old Ridenour Rd in Gahanna. Even though it was afternoon in all 3 cases, there were still many birds around. Notables included:

Ruby-thr.Hummingbird - still 1-2 in Gahanna today
Yellow-b.Sapsucker - first of season in Gahanna today
N.Flicker - uptick in #s at all 3 locations for this daytime migrant
Blue Jays - definite increase in #s. Today I had small groups flying south along Big Walnut Creek, so watch for migrating groups now.
Blue-headed Vireos - 1 in Gahanna on the 23rd was my FOS, followed by 2 in Bexley on the 24th
Ruby-cr.Kinglet - first one along Old Ridenour Rd today
Winter Wren - first migrant in Bexley yesterday
Swainson's Thrush - still some lurking in all 3 locations; also heard some flyovers the last 2 evenings
Cedar Waxwings - lots of small flocks in all 3 areas, taking advantage of a good berry and wild grape crop locally
Warblers - a skew towards the more hardy late migrants - Nashvilles, Tennessees, Black-thr.Greens, and Palms. No Yellow-rumps yet, but they should arrive soon.
Chipping Sparrows - flocks appearing in all 3 spots, including 40+ around Academy Park on the 23rd. Could find no other sparrows with them yet.
