Recently, for eleven days, from the day after Labor Day, September 3, thru and including September 11, we had a beautifully plumaged Ovenbird, grace our backyard in the village of Damascus, in southeastern Mahoning County. The nifty antics of the visitor were always entertaining to watch. Each morning, my wife Denise hoped our new found friend would still be there. Each day, the Ovenbird, systematically visited all the ground feeding areas, bobbing along, and scratching, apparently looking for insects or whatever. If any other birds were nearby on the ground, the Ovenbird became aggressive, chasing them. We saw Cardinals, American Goldfinches, and House Sparrows, be intimidated by this little dynamo. Following a daily routine, our orange crowned friend, would work its way across the grassy backyard to the cascading water fountain outside the picture window in the kitchen. At this location, it would pause, take a drink, and then fluff its wings with some of the spray from the fountain. After giving a memorable show for a few hours, it would disappear and not be seen until the next morning. Where did this beauty go for the remainder of the day? The close and personal viewing we witnessed for the eleven day period, was definitely a memorable experience not soon forgotten.
