There were 14 species of shorebirds in the middle wetland tract in the Deer Creek Wildlife Area this morning as habitat continues to improve. Since Tuesday there has been a notable influx of peeps, mostly Semipalmated Sandpipers, but new arrivals for the area this season today included one each of Western and Baird's Sandpipers which allowed for close observation on the south shore.

As others noted yesterday, the movement of sparrows has finally begun. The difference between this morning and Tuesday is mind blowing. The fields in the northern half of the wildlife area in Fayette County were swarming with mostly Song and Field Sparrows, but Lincoln's, Swamp, Savannah, and White-crowneds all could be found at most stops. More localized groups of Chipping Sparrows were at a few wooded edges. I've still had no luck yet finding any Nelson's and LeConte's in the wetlands though.

I did NOT see the Lesser Black-backed Gull roosting on the beach this morning, but it could still be anywhere in the reservoir.
