On our way to work on Friday, my wife noticed a large dark bird perched on telephone wires along State Route 31 just south of State Route 47. I quickly turned the car around, but didn't get to see the bird. She regularly sees vultures and crows, and felt this was something different. This morning on our drive in to Columbus, I saw a group of black birds in a tree, and one of them was much larger than the others, reminding me very much of a raven-size as compared to the accompanying crows. I've seen a lot of ravens, and this bird seemed to fit the requirements, with the usual caveat that it was a short view across the highway while traveling at a high rate of speed. Unfortunately, we were on US33, which precluded turning around without adding about 20 minutes to our commute (and it is Monday, after all). Today's bird was in a tree on the north side of 33, not far past the rest area if you're heading west on 33 (toward Marysville). This location is over 10 miles (as the raven flies) from Friday's sighting, but that doesn't seem unreasonable for a wandering corvid over the weekend. If anyone is driving in the Marysville area, please keep an eye out, I'll be looking carefully on the way home this afternoon.
