I heard that sparrows are hopping in Ohio right now, so I spent some time at Dutch Fork Wetlands (part of Dawes Arboretum) this morning (Friday, Oct. 4). I had 7 species of sparrow, the best being my first ever Nelson’s sparrow for Licking Co. Nelson’s are notoriously hard to relocate, but if you want to try for it, keep to the left, over the little “bridge”. When the main trail veers right, stay left again, going toward the fence to the east. There were several sparrows in the small trees and shrubs to the left of the trail, about 15-20 yards from where the trail splits. Be patient, and keep watching. The Nelson’s hopped up on one of the lower branches, but was in good sunlight and easily seen for at least 4 seconds. Doesn’t sound like a long time, but for this species, that’s as good as one can expect.
