I began watching the lake around 0745 this morning from home in Sheffield Lake.  Red-breasted Mergansers were moving in appreciable numbers nearshore & scaup flocks further out.  Among these fowl were two Brant passing close to shore & a single Long-tailed Duck headed west.  There were very few Bonaparte's moving initially, until a massive ball of 150 birds arrived on the scene and in their midst an immaculate 2nd-yr/ad LITTLE GULL.  This Little Gull was actually the first I've had in two years living here.

At this point, I recieved a call from Jen Brumfield & ran down to enjoy indesribable looks at a young Black-legged Kittiwake - over & over again, as the bird worked the breakwall mere feet away.  Fortunately, lots of folks were onhand to share in these views.

Lorain Harbor was desolate, as the Bonaparte's were upriver today.  Among approximately 5000 Bonies on the Black River, I could detect none different.  One male Common Merganser.

Good birding -

Gabe Leidy
Sheffield Lake
